Experience Hones Leadership Skills
It is not surprising why Leyah Hanserd was selected to represent Benedict College at the AIPAC Saban Leadership Seminar in Washington, DC this summer, even though the honor is usually reserved for upperclassmen. Leyah (MGP ’18), a graduate of Detroit Edison Public School Academy and biology major, is well-spoken and a leader amongst her peers. She’s also the newest president of the MGP Chapter at Benedict College.
At the conference, the 300 college students in attendance learned leadership and life skills.
“I’m able to take the skills that were given to me and apply it to my major and my leadership skills,” she said.
The four-day conference consisted of very busy days of educational sessions, field trips to places like the Smithsonian and the U.S. Capitol and networking with students from around the country. Leyah used the speaking skills she learned during her time at Midnight Golf to build relationships with students from different institutions, teachers and conference organizers.
“To not be afraid to go speak with and meet new people and get out of my comfort zone,” Leyah said of which MGP skills she used most during the conference.
For the rest of the summer, Leyah is doing research at Benedict on autonomous vehicles.
“I’m looking into how transportation mimics nature and how they can relate back to biology,” she said.
Benedict College is one of MGP’s official College Partners. More than 20 MGP alumni are currently enrolled at the college. Midnight Golf appreciates their partnership and commitment to our young people and values the work of Dr. Emmanuel Lalande as Vice President for Enrollment Management in taking care of the MGP alumni at the college.
