Alumni Story: Lawrence Price III

Receiving the National Association of Black Journalists’ Larry Whiteside Scholarship is recognition for the hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifices Lawrence Price III (MGP ’20) has made on his journey to becoming a sports journalist.

“Winning something like that is just a breath of fresh air,” he said. “It makes you feel the work you put in is paying off and gives you a space where people know who you are. “

Lawrence, a journalism major at Northwestern University, has taken advantage of many opportunities from internships, clubs, involvement at his university, scholarships, events, and networking in the pursuit of his dream career.

That includes joining the Midnight Golf Program during his senior year at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. Through Midnight Golf, Lawrence’s knowledge of the importance of networking expanded. This skill helps him both in school and in his work as a journalist.

“Midnight Golf allowed me to get a deeper understanding of networking and build on my networking skills,” he said.

As part of his scholarship award, this summer Lawrence will attend the NABJ annual conference in Birmingham, Alabama. He is also an intern with the Sports Journalism Institute and will spend 10 weeks at the Kansas City Star as a sports journalist.

When he graduates next year, Lawrence is considering going straight into the workforce as a sports journalist or continuing to graduate school. Either way, he is sure to take advantage of – and create for himself – opportunities to succeed.
