MGP awarded Skillman Foundation grant
Midnight Golf Program awarded $200,000 from Skillman Foundation to Lead Collaborative College Readiness Efforts
The Midnight Golf Program (MGP) was awarded the two-year Call for Collaboration grant by the Skillman Foundation to expand its proven college readiness efforts for its participants and extend services throughout Detroit. Through partnerships with Build Institute, Detroit Horse Power, Racquet Up Detroit and Urban League, the grant will increase access to viable college, university and other post-secondary options to Detroit youth.
With this grant, MGP will establish the College Success Community Series, college information sessions in the form of workshops and college fairs structured to help students gain familiarity with colleges, universities and other post-secondary education options. With five workshops and two college fairs in each of the next two years, participants will be taught how to improve their admit-ability, choose their best college option, and position themselves for college and beyond.
“We look forward to sharing our expertise about college preparation and opening our network of colleges and universities to our valued partners,” said Dave Gamlin, Midnight Golf’s Vice President and Program Director. “We thank the Skillman Foundation for making this important collaboration possible and for its commitment to Detroit’s youth.”
The workshops and college fairs will take place on Saturdays at Marygrove College to facilitate the broadest possible participation. They will be conducted from November to May 2019 and repeat in 2020.
About Midnight Golf
Since the program was founded in 2001, Midnight Golf has prided itself on its ability to make high school and college graduation possible for more than 2,500 of Detroit’s young people. The program, which uses mentorship, life-skills and college readiness training and proactive in-college support as cornerstones for success, has established a track-record where 100% of its students have graduated high school and 70% have graduated college – a rate that is 4-times higher than unsupported Detroit youth.
